NESD - MEDIA RELEASE
At the October 25, 2016 meeting of the Board of Education of the North East School Division, a motion was made to discontinue Grades 9-12 effective July 1, 2017 at Gronlid Central School in Gronlid, Saskatchewan.
At the Board’s September 27th meeting a school viability review of Gronlid Central School was authorized by the Board and notice was given in accordance with the requirements of The Education Act, 1995.
Since the time when notice was given of a school review the School Community Council of Gronlid Central School passed a motion consenting to the discontinuation of grades 9 to 12 at Gronlid Central School.
The Board is satisfied that a school viability review to consider possible school closure is not warranted at this time. The projected number of students in grades Kindergarten to 8 indicate a K-8 school is viable according to the Board’s School Viability Policy. As a result, the Board of Education has decided that grades 9 to 12 at Gronlid Central School will be discontinued effective July 1, 2017 and that Gronlid Central School be removed from possible closure status.
Going forward, the NESD will begin transition planning with the Gronlid Central School Community Council to ensure a smooth transition to a new K-8 school structure and to plan for transportation of high school students to a division high school. It is anticipated that the majority of Grade 9-12 students from Gronlid will be attending high school in Melfort.
