April 6, 2020 - NESD Letter to Parents from Director of Education

March 26, 2020

Dear NESD Families,

We hope that everyone is at home safe and sound and looking after each other. Together, we can do our part to practice safety guidelines and self-isolation to help slow the spread of the coronavirus. Self-isolation and social distancing is our shared responsibility to give our health providers an opportunity to deal with the pandemic.

Last week classes in our schools were suspended and schools were closed. This week our system has been on pause to adjust to the new reality. A big question that you may have is, what will learning look like for your child(ren) going forward during school closure.

In the North East School Division you can expect that:

  • All school buildings will remain closed.
  • All administration, teachers and support staff will be working from home beginning March 30.
  • During the week of March 30, school staff will be contacting you to discuss your child(ren)'s learning plan.
  • Updated information will be available on the NESD website.

It is important to maintain the relationships we have built with our students, families and communities. We look forward to finding innovative ways to support your child(ren)'s learning journey as they develop the necessary skills for the future.

March 16, 2020

Dear North East School Division families,

The Government of Saskatchewan outlined new measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The following measures are effective as of Tuesday, March 17, 2020:

  • Pre-K – Grade 12 classes will wind down Tuesday through Thursday.
  • Effective March 20, 2020 schools will be closed indefinitely.
  • Families who are able, are encouraged to keep students home during the wind down.  There will be no academic penalty for students staying home.
  • Please collect student belongings before the end of the school day Thursday, March 19, 2020.
  • Please ensure your family contact information is accurate with our schools prior to closure.

Effective Friday, March 20, 2020 the North East School Division will be working with the   Response and Planning Team created by the Ministry of Education to ensure that:

  • student progress and achievement is determined to receive a final grade;
  • students will progress to their next grade level for 2020-2021;
  • students eligible to graduate from Grade 12 will graduate this year; and
  • the Ministry of Education and school divisions will work with Saskatchewan Post-Secondary Institutions to adapt entry requirements for programs commencing in the next academic year.

Over the coming days our school division will work with the Ministry of Education to clarify any education supports or opportunities for students during the time of school closure. More information will be posted on our website as next steps are determined.

We know that this is a time of uncertainty for our communities. We strongly encourage families to follow the Federal and Provincial guidelines for social distancing and limiting interactions. Please access the website for the latest information about COVID-19 in our province.

We will continue to be in contact in the coming days and weeks. Please take care of one another.

Don Rempel

Director of Education
