On May 23, 2019, as part of the
mentorship portion of the Kīnawind Partnership, grade 8 students from KEC travelled
to TMSS to participate in learning experiences in preparation for the Cardboard
Boat Challenge. By the end of the day, students were interacting with
each other and sharing ideas while building prototypes in anticipation of the
competition.
Students were greeted by sheets of cardboard and rolls of
tape upon arrival at the SIAST campus in Saskatoon on May 28, 2019.
Spirits were strong and camaraderie was high as the teams raced the clock to
bring their ideas to fruition. As the building portion of the competition
came to an end, the students portaged their boats to the pool where their
designs were put to the test. The teams from KEC and TMSS finished with
two firsts and a second in the timed heats of the speed challenge. It was
great to see the students cheer on their teams as the captains of the boats
battled the other teams. The team of Gavin Scott, Tristian Smokeyday,
Loukas Sherlock and Alysha Hall received the most prestigious award of the
competition placing first overall. Their performance in the speed
challenge along with their scores in the design and construction phase of the
event brought home the big prize for KEC and TMSS.
Participants from KEC included: Teera Littlecrow, Gavin Scott, Tristian Smokeyday, Jacob Scott, Keegan Schneider, Denzel Thomas, Trey Thomas
Participants from TMSS included: Jackson Howes, Jenna Will, Daiton Hunter, Jocelyn Junk, Loukas Sherlock, Alysha Hall, Arizona LaClaire, Xander Brown
