At the January 24, 2017 meeting of the Board of Education of the North East School Division a motion was made to consider the discontinuance of one or more grades up to and including the complete closure of Bjorkdale School with an effective date of discontinuance or closure of July 3, 2017.
A motion does not mean that the board will discontinue grades or close the school, it simply means the Board will consider discontinuance of one or more grades or school closure. No final decision has been made at this point in the process.
The next steps will be for the Board of Education to meet with the School Community Council at a mutually agreeable time and place and meet with the staff of Bjorkdale School at a mutually agreeable time and place in order to provide them with information and allow them to provide relevant information to the Board.
Information will be provided to School Community Council and to the parents of the affected students of the school about all potential receiving schools and options for transportation to and from the potential receiving schools.
Public consultations and meetings provided for under legislation shall be arranged by the Director or together with such other forms of consultation as may be determined from time to time by the Board or the Director. A public meeting of electors will be held following the provincial budget in March, no later than March 31, 2017.
The Board shall determine whether or not to close the school or discontinue grades after consultations have occurred and shall make a motion to close the school or discontinue grades by April 30.
