Coaches for Team Canada Have Been Selected!

Bill Birns and Greg McJannet have been selected to coach the Canadian team for Can Am Bowl XIII, an all-star Six-Man Football Game between the best graduating senior high school players from the USA and Canada.

Bill Birns has been a high school science teacher for the past 13 years.  He began his career teaching in Carrot River where he met Cory Schmaltz who was busy coaching everything (and still is).  He started coaching football in 2000 at Southey School.  The head coach, Dean Andrews, wanted a defense coach, so Bill became the offensive coordinator/quarterback/running backs coach and has been doing so every since.  Bill wakes up everyday during football season with a smile on his face, knowing he will be on the field working with young men and seeing them grow as football players, but more importantly, as good citizens.  He is proud to say that along the way Southey has won a silver medal in 2003 and a gold medal in 2007.  Bill Birns have been married to Heather for almost 9 years, and they have two children, Madison, who will be 5 soon, and Kieran, who is 2.  He knows he is obsessed with football, because his daughter tells everyone that he teaches 'football' for a living.  Bill is thankful for the opportunity to coach at Can-Am, and is looking forward to meeting the boys in early July.

The Carrot River Wildcat Football program was started by Cory Schmaltz in 1998.  In 2001 Greg McJannet joined the coaching team with the Carrot River Wildcats and has acted as the defensive coach since then.  Greg and Cory Schmaltz helped lead the Wildcats to an undefeated 10 - 0 season and a Gold Medal in 2005.  Greg coached the defensive line at the 2006 Ed Henick Senior Bowl.  In 2007 the Wildcats garnered a silver medal.  In the summer of 2008 Greg was the defensive coach for Team Canada at the Can Am Bowl in Porcupine Plain.  In 2008 Greg earned his second gold medal with the Wildcats.  Greg was honoured to have been a part of the Wildcat program and he will share that pride in his last game as Wildcat coach, Greg his wife Shannon and his children Hannah and Benjamin will be moving to Outlook this summer.
